Loneliness and isolation are very real enemies to the elderly in Kibera. We take on these foes with our Community Engagement program centering around weekly get-togethers where the Wazee can gather, drink tea, tell stories, sing, make friends, and feel a sense of belonging.
By far, when asked what helps the most, the Wazee told us that the weekly meetings do the most good. We were surprised… until we attended one.
There are two components to the Community Engagement meetings. Foremost, it is providing a time and a place for coming together where the Wazee are not overlooked or passed by– they are center stage. Sometimes literally! The Wazee drama club puts on regular performances and they’re good.
The other component is the more serious side; Wazee Foundation volunteers use the meetings to see how the elderly are fairing and ask what they most need. Sometimes the needs are basic. Other times more serious– such as providing anti-rape training for the elderly women. Yes, the older women are raped in Kibera.
